Support to the Hungarian Academy of Sciences

To Prof. László Lovász
President of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences,
Dear Prof. László Lovász,
It is with deep concern that the Brazilian Association of Ecological Science and Conservation (Associação Brasileira de Ciência Ecológica e Conservação – ABECO) sees the recent changes in science policy in Hungary, putting Hungarian science legacy at risk.
As an association of scientists, we believe that academic freedom is fundamental for intellectual inquiry in a true democracy, and that sustained investment in science and education is very precious for societies. The Hungarian Academy of Sciences is the oldest and the most important scientific institution in Hungary, and the maintenance of its autonomy and original budget is essential to maintain the excellence of the Hungarian research network established for decades.
We are convinced that any government should pave the development of its country and the prosperity of its people by means of a real commitment to science and education with academic freedom.
Sincerely,
Prof. Valério De Patta Pillar, President
for the members of the Executive Council
